The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and BidhanNagar police employees found themselves at the center of local residents' anger as they commenced the demolition of a building based on court orders. The situation escalated when the local community began protesting by blocking the roads, leading to a standoff with a significant police presence. The incident unfolded in Shanti Nagar, Sukanta Nagar, Salt Lake.
In response to a High Court order, a substantial contingent of police forces and municipal personnel was deployed, along with the Public Works Department (WAP). The Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay issued an immediate demolition order for an illegal construction within Bidhannagar, stipulating that the demolition should commence by 1 pm on Monday.
The judge also mandated that the Bidhannagar Municipality disconnect water and electricity connections to the five-storey building. Following the demolition, the municipality is required to submit a preliminary report to the High Court on Tuesday morning. Local residents have raised questions regarding why the ongoing construction, which dates back to 1995, was not halted earlier.
